May brings a host of exciting new events to the Chicago area, many of which are appropriately socially distanced. Many of us are getting antsy to get out and be social again but want to do so safely and responsibly. Luckily, many event planners understand that struggle, and there are a host of great things to attend this month! Here is a list of Chicago events this May if you are looking to get out again!

Drive-Up Events

Drive-up movies aren’t the only events that are viewable from your car anymore. If you are looking for something child-friendly to do (or just want some joyful fun), you can attend the Dino Safari Drive Thru Adventure from May 7th – May 23rd! During your drive, you play an audio tour through your car speakers or Bluetooth giving you a full narrative experience as you drive through the life-sized moving dinosaurs. From the T-Rex to the Spinosaurus, there are 40+ enormous dinosaurs to gawk at on your journey.

Are you looking for something more traditional? The Music Box is continuing to hold fun drive-up movie events. Upcoming from May 7th to May 13th is “The Big One – Heist Films at the Music Box,” celebrating fun heist films from Ocean’s Eleven to Heat. If this isn’t your style, check out their website for other movies and events upcoming this month. Are you more comfortable staying home? You also can use Music Box Direct to stream films while supporting a local business!

Catch Some Fireworks

Every Saturday in May, the Navy Pier will be hosting a special 10-minute firework show! There are plenty of safe, open areas to view the beautiful show, making for a perfect date night. While there, dine at one of the many outdoor restaurant options like the Billy Goat Tavern or the Lirica. They also will have a limited amount of rides and cruises running, such as the Centennial Wheel and the Odyssey cruises. The Navy Pier is reopening with many safety precautions in place, such as a facemask requirement, 90+ hand sanitizer dispensers, and Social Distancing Ambassadors to ensure everyone is staying safe. Note that groups of 10 or more are asked not to attend.

Support Local Businesses

The Puerto Rican Cultural Center is working with the businesses on Paseo Boricua in Humboldt Park to host an event called El Jolgorio de Salsa y Más. Every Saturday, this event will host a series of local business pop-ups, cultural performances such as ¡WEPA! Mercado del Pueblo, DJs, and Salsa dancing at Esmeralda’s lounge. Attending is a great way to support local businesses and artists while also supporting the fantastic Puerto Rican Chicago community! To keep up to date on the different events and attractions, follow the Puerto Rican Cultural Center Facebook page as well as the event’s Facebook page. They also share more photos.
